[image 1]Northwest Vista College joined other Alamo Colleges in the consolidated scholarship application judging event held Sept. 18 at the Workforce Center of Excellence.
A total of 96 community members and Alamo Colleges’ faculty and staff members participated in the review and evaluation of scholarship applications.
The number of student applications received by the Sept. 13 deadline exceeded 2,100, according to Anna Rangel, scholarship coordinator for the Alamo Colleges Foundation. “This year, the number of students applying increased by 600 over the same period last year.”
NVC faculty and staff members serving as judges included Paul Northway, Sarah Ball, Jennifer Ortiz, Clint Dunagan, Tony Canestraro, Eva Gaitan, Jimena Marin, Ruth Prieto, Kori Schneider, Kazia Estrada and Angelica Esparza.
[image 2]“I was impressed with the diversity of the student applicants, and how they shared their life experiences with us. It was a moving experience to learn about our students. I will definitely promote the scholarship application in my classes,” Tony Canestaro said about her experience as an NVC scholarship application judge.
Clinton Jones, vice president and business operations manager senior at Chase Bank; Michele Lopez, recruiting specialist at Nationwide; Genevieve Flores, general manager of Conexio; Eliot Lee, consultant with MVHL Consulting, LLC; Christine Crowley, retired NVC faculty member; Victor Castillo, associate with Alamo Architects; Jeremy Pancoast, director of entertainment services at SeaWorld San Antonio; Cindy Bosquez, market manager, Potranco Village Banking Center; Bryan Chase, president of the Friends of the Arts at NVC (FANs) Board of Directors; and Vanessa Villarreal and Mary Soesbee, community representatives at Frost Bank, represented NVC as community members on the judging panel.
Lynne T. Dean, NVC director of institutional advancement, and Alice Martinez, NVC administrative assistant specialist, helped facilitate the judging event.
Scholarship awards range from $200 to $3,000 per academic year with an average award amount of approximately $750. The amount is applied to the recipient’s student account for tuition, fees, books and other educational costs.
Last year, NVC awarded $232,211 in scholarships to 274 students.
