[image 1]Northwest Vista College hosted “Connecting OUR Students From the Alamo Way to UTSA: Bridging the Transition Gap” symposium on Oct. 31. In attendance were admissions, enrollment and other student services employees from each of the Alamo Colleges and UTSA.
The conference's purpose was to partner with transfer institutions and “Build a bridge and create a pathway for student success,” said Dr. Adelina S. Silva, vice chancellor for Student Success for the Alamo Colleges.
[image 2]They keynote speaker, Dr. Jennifer Bloom of the University of South Carolina, provided a workshop on advising. Later, UTSA President Dr. Ricardo Romo, gave special remarks about Alamo Colleges and UTSA partnership.
“We’re very proud of the transfer students that come from Alamo Colleges,” Dr. Romo said. “It’s a testament to the work that our Alamo Colleges are doing.”
“Alamo Colleges is our biggest feeder school,” said Beverly Woodson Day, director of Undergraduate Admissions for UTSA. “The collaboration is necessary. It’s a good thing as everyone having the same message at the same time.
Other workshops included presentations and discussions on transfer plans and advising processes for student success. This event was first in a series. The next symposium will be on financial in February 2015.
[image 3]These symposiums are the result of a nation-wide initiative titled “Engaging Latino Students for Transfer and College Completion Project Partners” to help increase completion rates for Latino students.
“Our job is to create degree pathways and advising models that make it easy for students to transfer, so when they transition from Alamo Colleges to UTSA, there is no question what they need to do,” Dr. Silva added.
