[image 1]The Alamo Colleges Foundation held the fifth consolidated scholarship application judging event April 5 at the Workforce Center of Excellence.
About 2,400 students have applied online for Foundation scholarships, which is about the same number as last year. Last year’s total number of applications represented a 33 percent increase, according to Jim Eskin, executive director of the Foundation.
Participating colleges included NVC, San Antonio College, St. Philip’s College and Palo Alto College. This year marked the [image 2]first year Palo Alto took part in the consolidated judging event. NVC faculty and staff members serving as judges included Daniel Johnson, Barbara Perez, Kori Schneider, Renata Serafin and Greg Ward.
Lynne T. Dean, NVC director of institutional advancement; Lucy Gauna, NVC scholarship coordinator; and Manny Martinez, NVC alumni coordinator, helped facilitate the judging event.
[image 3]NVC also had community members help in the judging. They were:
- Rosantina Aranda, vice president of Frost Bank and member of the NVC Business Council;
- Gino Caliendo, general manager of the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa;
- Victor Castillo of Alamo Architects;
- Christine Crowley, retired NVC faculty member;
- Eliot Lee of MVHL Consulting, LLC;
- Rosendo Solis III of GTW Consultants & Associates, LLC, and also a member of the NVC Business Council; and
- Joel Stevens, human resources director, Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa
[image 4]Awards range from $200 to $3,000 per academic year with an average award amount of approximately $750. The money is applied to the recipient’s student account for tuition, fees, books and other educational costs.
