March 2014 All College Meeting

Mardi Gras was the theme for the March All College Meeting hosted by Student Success.

NVC President Jackie Claunch started the meeting talking about the Survey of Entering Student Engagement or SENSE. She said the ideal benchmark number for the college is 50 and NVC scored below that in the categories of Early Connections, Clear Academic Plan and Pathways and Effective Track to College Readiness. The college has revamped its new student advising process to tackle these three categories head on.

The 2013 Inventory Results out of six Alamo Colleges campuses, including district, ranked NVC No. 2 at having the lowest dollar amount of items resolved. NVC only had $6,116 worth of unresolved items, compared to other campuses such as Palo Alto that had a low of zero dollars to San Antonio College that had a high of $91,993. Jackie thanked IT's Laura Alvarez and her team for putting NVC in such a good position.

Jackie reminded everyone the summer registration begins March 24 and fall registration is anticipated for April 21. Encourage students to register before the spring semester ends. There are also changes in new student orientation in which it will be mandatory for First Time In College (FTIC) students and will be paired with FTIC advising sessions. The orientation team is seeking volunteers to be presenters/tour guides, so please contact them at mvc-orientation@alamo.edu.

Driving to the college also may be a challenge in the coming months due to a construction expansion on Loop 1604 between Potranco and Culebra roads. The Texas Department of Transportation will hold an Open House on Tuesday, March 18 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Dolph Briscoe Middle School to provide more details.

The deadline for the writing contest “Why a Degree” at NVC has been extended to Sunday, March 16 to give students more time to participate. To get more info, see the link. Also don't forget to donate $10 to NVC scholarships by texting VISTA to 20222. Be sure to confirm “YES” and $10 will be added to your cell phone bill.

Before ending the meeting, Jackie warmly thanked NVC Faculty Senate President Viviane Marioneaux and xxx for taking the lead to speaking out peacefully for hard issues that's been circulating in the news.
