Business Leaders Share Secrets of Success in Starting a Business, Getting Hired

[image 1]“For a business providing a service, the most important thing is developing a website and marketing.”

“You must have a degree. Getting a degree means that you have gone through a process and can focus.”

“The way you put yourself and your business out there is to do good work.”

“Don’t take the first job that comes along. It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.”

These thoughts were just a few of the ideas and answers eight business leaders gave in a two-day presentation to the NVC Business Student Organization about starting a business and what employers are looking for in new employees.

[image 2]The panelists, consisting primarily of members of the NVC Business Council, discussed strategies and tips with a combined audience of more than 80 students. On Nov. 11, speakers on the topic of starting a business included Oscar Noel Garcia, co-owner, Old Mine Jewelers; Eric A. Hinojosa, The Law Office of Eric Hinojosa, PLLC; Ruben Lopez, business advisor, University of Texas at San Antonio Small Business Development Center; and Bede Ramcharan, president and CEO, Indatatech.

On Thursday, Nov. 12, panelists discussed getting hired and what employers are looking for in new employees. Speakers included Shelah Simmons, Ph.D., CEO, Genesis Professional Solutions; Norma Salazar, vice president, Applications and Delivery Management, Security Service Federal Credit Union; Laura Villalobos, recruiter, The Hartford; Analiza Garrido, senior staffing coordinator, The Hartford; Jakeup Rios, human resources manager, Recruitment, Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa.

The speaker panels and presentations are a project of the NVC Business Council, a membership organization which actively seeks partnerships and collaborations with businesses and their leadership for NVC and the students we serve.
