Business Owners, Recruiters Share Advice, Secrets for Success

business-council-speakers-day-2-1For Genaro Trevino, owner of Fusion Cuisine and Catering, starting a business has been a life experience filled with a wide range of emotions.

“Business is a huge stress and not easy, but it pays off in so many ways,” he said, to an audience of NVC students.

“It’s important to surround yourself with the right people,” he added.

Trevino, an Alamo Colleges alumnus, was one of seven business leaders volunteering their time for a two-day student speaker series on starting a business and what employers are looking for when hiring employees.

Panelists, consisting primarily of NVC Business Council members, discussed various strategies, tips and personal experiences about what to expect in the world of self-employment and gaining job experience.

Monica Del Campo with State Farm Insurance, stressed the importance of maintaining a good driving record and credit history.

Attorney Eric A. Hinojosa provided insight on seeking opportunities such as the business and inventor incubators at institutions such as UTSA.

He added, that as a former NVC student himself, he’s amazed at how far the college has come in connecting students with the business community.

“When I heard about a Business Council here at Vista, I said, that’s awesome!”

Trevino added that he has utilized community programs such as SCORE and the LiftFund’s Café Commerce at the downtown library.

Other guest speakers visiting the NVC campus included Kenny Vallespin, with The Bank of San Antonio, Melissa Matthews with GM Financial, Isaias Rodriguez with Nationwide and Jakeup Rios with the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa.

Ralph Mendez, NVC accounting faculty, assisted in moderating one of the sessions, which were presented by the Business Student Organization.

Speaker panels and presentations such as these are a project of the NVC Business Council, a membership organization which actively seeks partnerships and collaborations with businesses and their leadership for NVC and the students we serve.
