Wishing You a Healthy and Relaxing Holiday

By Dr. Ric Baser

It was a beautiful day yesterday on our NVC campus. I enjoyed spending time with our NVC family and introducing folks to the sport of disc golf. NVC’s Staff Senate coordinated the event and collaborated with Kraken Chains Disc Golf Shop to provide training. Our players included a cross section of faculty and staff who embraced the challenge and worked on their putting (throwing) styles: spin, push, straddle and turbo. It was amazing to watch our first-time players work on their grip, stance, windup and release.

From a distance, the sport looks easy but professional disc golfers who seek out our course appreciate and challenge themselves to our hilly terrain, numerous trees and NVC’s Lago Vista. Yesterday’s players were additionally challenged by the wind and sunshine (see pictures from the event). Their perseverance tells me that enthusiasm builds momentum and trumps fear and uncertainty every time.

It also reminds me of the work each of you do on a daily basis to rise to the challenges we face in the midst of the pandemic, enrollment losses, students in crisis and personal roadblocks and even grief.

As we leave for the winter break, I wish you a healthy and relaxing holiday season with your family and friends. I appreciate each of you and know that when we return in January, we will be ready to perfect our grip, stance, windup and release. I trust that no matter what 2022 brings, the NVC community is poised to preserve and fulfill our learning vision:

“To become responsible members of our world community, we create exemplary models for:

Learning to Be…
Learning to Work…
Learning to Serve…
Learning to Lead…

Together.”
