The Path to Graduation: Sharman Castillo

Sharman Castillo’s success story at Northwest Vista College didn’t take the traditional path.

She dropped out of high school and later earned her GED, travelled the world as a flight attendant and now has earned a scholarship to study Theology at St. Mary’s University.

Sharman, a Music Technology major, is currently shaping her dream to enter Gospel Music Ministry and sing for the rest of her life. Following what she describes as, “needing to get on the right path,” Sharman returned to college seeking the skills needed to direct large choirs.

“I thought it would be great for me to learn how to create and arrange music for myself, so that I could teach it to others,” she said.

The mother of five and grandmother of three, says that earning her associate’s degree will open doors for her.

“My degree proves that I am qualified,” she said.

During her time at NVC, Sharman says she not only found new confidence but developed a passion for community involvement.

“There are a lot of things I can do for my community that I did not know until I came to NVC,” she said. “I will always remember Northwest Vista as the school that believed in me and other students, she added. “It allowed me to dream bigger.”

The soon-to-be NVC Alum, offers these words of encouragement for every student:

“Work hard, believe in yourself and never think what you are doing is in vain.” She adds, “Learn all you can, and retain it, because everything you learn, you are going to use later on in life.”

Sharman Castillo is the recipient of the Jack Stone Endowed Music Scholarship and USAA Scholarship at NVC and will be graduating this May.
