Saying Goodbye to Betty Cunningham

This past February, NVC came together via Zoom to celebrate the retirement of Elizabeth “Betty” Cunningham. Again we will celebrate her accomplishments and life this week at her funeral services. She passed away on July 2.

She worked in Student Success in leadership of the Veteran’s Center and received numerous recognitions and accolades for her service to  students and to NVC. Betty retired earlier this year, after more than 25 years of service. Betty was a senior coordinator and leader of Veterans Affairs. She made it her responsibility to provide quality care to those serving in the armed forces and their families.

Betty, who is also a graduate of the University of Incarnate Word, was a military wife for many years where she volunteered her time working to help new military families adjust. In 1998, she was NVC’s first employee and was one of the first two advisors for veteran students.

Betty was also on the board of directors of the Volunteer Services Council of the San Antonio State Supported Living Center, where her sister was a resident. Betty was instrumental in helping to collect much needed toiletries and items for residents in their Angel Tree program. To read her full obituary, go here. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations help start a scholarship fund for Betty at NVC. Go here to donate.

The following NVC employees will serve as pall bearers at her funeral: Abel Ruiz, Daniel Johnson, Felix Salinas, Zak Chernoch, Terrance Parker and Tim Hammonds. Employees are encouraged to wear purple to represent NVC.
