Police Officer Mary Ramirez Helps to Save a Life

[image 1]Alamo Colleges Police Officer Mary Ramirez was recently recognized by Alamo Colleges Chancellor Bruce Leslie for helping to save the life of a 22-year old man who was in a horrific motorcycle accident near Northwest Vista College.

Mary says she and Alamo Colleges Police Officer John Esquivel were on their way to the campus when they saw a bunch of cars scattered on the access road at Loop 1604 and Ellison Drive. She got out the car to see what was going on and saw Aaron Beaugard's legs severed and eventually found him in the ditch.[image 2]

His body was thrown from the motorcycle when a Ford pickup truck hit him and he smashed into a highway sign. She immediately got her tourniquet out of her chest pocket to put it on his leg to stop the blood loss. Another San Antonio Police Officer helped to stop the blood loss on the other leg. Mary said Aaron's brother, who was also driving behind Aaron but was able to stop in time, was also there by Aaron's side. John helped with directing traffic and making sure witnesses didn't leave the scene.

Mary said she did what she was trained to do even though she never thought she would see something like that in her life. She is relieved Aaron (he was not a student at NVC) was able to survive and is healing. Aaron's family started an online fundraising campaign to help with his medical bills since he had no insurance: https://www.gofundme.com/cp4kypwk
