Northwest Vista College received 96 entries for the third annual “Why a Degree” writing contest.
This year, there were 30 more essays submitted than in 2012. The goal of the contest is to create a dialogue about an associate degree by having students think about and write about degree completion.
The project was first started three years ago by Public Relations as part of a communication plan to address NVC’s Strategic Objective pertaining to degree completion.
Students wrote their essays based on a theme of their choice (read the Writing Contest Rules).
Another goal of the Why a Degree Writing Contest is to engage faculty and staff in degree completion by providing them an opportunity to read students’ personal stories. Thirty faculty and staff members from across the college reviewed the essays which were assigned and scored using an anonymous numbering system.
