NVC Welcomes Kari McKay – New Career Experience Navigator

Northwest Vista College welcomes Kari McKay as a new certified career experience navigator. She previously worked for Grand Canyon University as an advisor with online military students in Phoenix, Ariz.

Kari moved to San Antonio last month. Before moving here, she lived in Arizona all her life so she is adjusting to a new state and city. Kari’s sister lives in Arlington and this summer they both did a Texas road trip, including visiting Austin, San Antonio, Galveston and Dallas.

“I had been wanting a change and was thinking about moving – and after visiting San Antonio –  it felt like a good fit,” she adds. “I started looking at the colleges and universities in the area and found the career navigator position. I interviewed and didn’t hear anything for six weeks. Then late November, HR called and said, can you start in January? And here I am!”

Kari has a bachelor’s in Criminal Justice from Arizona State University and a masters in Counseling from Argosy University. She says she didn’t graduate from a community college but she did attend one and loved most of her classes there. Kari also taught adjunct at the same community college she attended many years later.

At NVC, Kari is a part of a new team called Department of Experiential Learning. She will be helping students get experiential learning opportunities, including internships, that they can include on their transcripts. She will also provide students with internship opportunities on the Experiential Learning page on Alamo Experience and in the NVC digital sites.

Kari said since she’s new to town, she is still exploring the city and finding interesting places to go. She and her dog have been checking out different parks and hiking trails on the weekend.
