Northwest Vista College (NVC) will offer Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)/Paramedic training starting in January 2024. The training is made possible through a partnership with San Antonio College (SAC) where the Emergency Medical Technician program is housed and accredited at the associate degree and certificate levels.
“Many medical employers in our service area in Westover Hills need trained EMT professionals,” said Northwest Vista College President Dr. Amy Bosley. “Our goal through this partnership with San Antonio College is to respond promptly to the workforce needs of our local employers.”
The two sister colleges within the Alamo Colleges District joined resources to benefit students and the community. The training at Northwest Vista College will be at the certificate level. Those who complete the training can become Emergency Medical Technicians in only one semester. This allows entry into the medical field, where students gain experience, build their resumes, and make professional connections. Students also have the opportunity to build upon the credential and continue on a seamless pathway to an associate degree at San Antonio College.
Earnings potential of Emergency Medical Technicians and paramedics depends on the employment setting and geographic location of their jobs, as well as their training and experience. The annual wages can range from $28,270 to $56,890 or more, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Employment and Wages, May 2022.
“The EMT program at San Antonio College has been in existence for 23 years, and provides the local community with quality EMT professionals,” said San Antonio College President Dr. Naydeen González-De Jesús. “We are thrilled to expand the program to other sectors of our county.”
Through this partnership, students who live and work near Northwest Vista College can complete the entire certificate program at the Northwest Vista College location. Those students who prefer the San Antonio College location will still be able to attend that campus.
Information sessions about the program will be held on November 13 and November 14 at 2 p.m. at Northwest Vista College in the Redbud Learning Center, Room 118.
