Culturally Responsive Training

Dr. Alexandra Coso Strong (Florida International University) led a two-day STEM focused training on Co-Designing Culturally Responsive Learning Environments in March.

Drs. Juan Ocampo and Amber McClung from St. Mary’s University and Drs. Mary Zocchi and Thomas Pressly from Northwest Vista College were session facilitators.

From NVC, our very own Yvette Uresti and Amanda Bartonek participated in the training, as well as Eric Madrid (Chair of Sciences) and Anna Marie Evans (Psychology).

From Alamo Colleges, Gloria Guerra (SPC Math/Statistics), Christina Flores (PAC English and INRW), Diana Garcez (SAC CIS), and Henry Griffith (SAC Chair of Math, Engineering, and Computer Science) all participated with about 18 faculty/staff from St. Mary’s University.

If you would like to attend one of the future trainings sponsored through the FUERTE grant co-awarded with St. Mary’s University, please contact Thomas (tpressly@alamo.edu).

There was also an advanced training on Challenging Assumptions: A Culturally Responsive Look at Curriculum Design led by Dr. Strong. From NVC, Richard Crabb (Learning Assistance Services), Melaku Bogale (Physics), Roxanne Penaloza (Grants), Prakash Nair (Chemistry), Mary Zocchi (Math), Elsa Maldonado (Education), and Thomas Pressly (Engineering) participated.
