Clubs Provide Students Success Opportunities

[image 1]About 15 NVC students, who are a part of NVC clubs and organizations, and three Student Success staff members recently attended the 2013 Adelante Leadership Institute conference in San Antonio.

Marie Morgan of Student Life said, “It was three days of eye-opening events for many of our students. It provided workshops, sessions, exercises, great conversations, and hands-on activities; all led by corporate, motivational and educational leaders.”

She added that students from all over the United States were able to network with professionals in a variety of fields, many of whom offered internships and employment opportunities. They also received advice on the importance of effectively planning and preparing for their selected job market.  Presentations were made by some of the country’s top corporate representatives and organizations leaders.

Marie added that students are encouraged to join a club, organization, or participate in an activity since these experiences can open doors for students; and gives them access to events like Adelante.

Adelante began in 1993 as a program by the Miller Brewing Company (now known as MillerCoors) and the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities. Adelante provides insightful professional advice and teaches students planning skills that allows them to understand and realize their full potential. Some of the sessions that students attended included power of networking, resume critique/mentor discussions and the career expo.

NVC student Jessica Zapata said the speakers were encouraging and provided validation that she can accomplish her goals.

“I liked the variety of speakers since they came from different industries and had their own different story to tell,” said Jessica. “They were able to attract the attention of  the diverse group of students that attended.”
