NVC Career and Technical Students Can Apply to Get Child Care Funds

Students enrolled in Northwest Vista College (NVC) Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, can now apply for Carl D. Perkins Grant Child Care Program funds. This could be a game changer for the average 1 in 4 students who are attending college and also raising kids.

Part- or full-time students who are working toward an Associate of Applied Science or certificate program at NVC can apply for funds to help with child care costs for any fall, spring, and summer semesters. The award renews for approved applicants who continue to meet requirements and can pay an average of just under $200 a week for full-time care of a child aged 1-3.

NVC’s CTE programs include many in-demand areas such as cybersecurity, networking, and nanotechnology. Many of these programs align with STEM fields and offer advanced certificates and awards that can boost a student’s current and future earning power.

The Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act (Perkins V) focuses on developing academic achievement for students enrolled in CTE programs that are in high-demand locally and at the state level. One guiding purpose for the Perkins V is to expand “the employment opportunities for populations who are chronically unemployed or underemployed, including individuals with disabilities, individuals from economically disadvantaged families, out-of-workforce individuals, youth who are in, or have aged out of, the foster care system, and homeless individuals.”

The estimated real cost of child care has gone up by 47 percent over pre-pandemic costs using the Center for American Progress child care calculator.

“We know the cost of child care can be expensive and trying to juggle that with work and college is added stress for our students,” said Rita Perez, NVC coordinator of occupational programs. “This new funding is a great opportunity for students to stay in college and eventually earn an associate of applied science degree.”

To be eligible, students must meet application requirements that include having a Pell Grant, using a licensed day care provider or after school program that accepts NVC reimbursement, and meeting a special or unique circumstance.

Final support amounts depend on part- or full-time status, as well as overall funding available at the time of application. For more information, visit https://www.alamo.edu/nvc/childcare/. Full requirement details are on the application.
