Fiesta Theme Bragging Breakfast

The fiesta-themed Bragging Breakfast opened with Dr. Russ Frohardt, Northwest Vista College dean of Arts & Sciences, introducing his academic areas to the audience through a quiz complete with fiesta medals as prizes.

The areas that Russ oversees include: Dual Credit, Community Engagement, NVC librarians, Humanities, Natural & Physical Sciences, Fine and Performing Arts and Kinesiology, Mathematics and Engineering, Social Sciences, English and Reading, Title V Project Math Paths, Teaching with Technology and the Quality Enhancement Plan. Before making announcements, NVC President Dr. Ric Baser proudly reminded everyone that NVC is the No. 1 Community College in Texas according to BestColleges.com.

Announcements:

• The NVC Counseling Services recently partnered with The Center for Healthcare Services and UNIFY to provide sexual health information, STD prevention and other resources to our students. The program materials placed special focus on consent.

• Faculty Rudy De La Cruz Jr. was featured in the Rivard Report and Cox Radio for spearheading, along with his students and several community partners, to preserve San Antonio’s cultural heritage from the 1,500’s to the 1,800s.

• Haetham Abdul-Raza, NVC Sociology adjunct faculty, defended his dissertation. Congratulations!

• Gary Bowling was named as, “A Transition Person” during a 7 Habits of Highly Effective People workshop. “Who has been a transition person for you personally?” This question asks participants to think of someone they have encountered who models positive habits that strengthen and build others. These “transition people” help others focus on proactive, effective behaviors. In short, they make a positive difference and as such are viewed as leaders.

• Dr. Kurt Elliott was one of only 25 faculty selected from middle schools, high schools, tribal colleges, and community colleges across the United States to attend the National Human Genome Research Institute’s 2017 Short Course in Genomics.

Celebrations:
 

• The Wildcat Spirit Award was bestowed to Biology faulty Gladys Malave

• The Employe of the Month Award was given to Debra Perales, an administrative services specialist.

• The audience sang Happy Birthday to Bertha Vida’s of NVC Arts and Sciences.To end the breakfast, MC Red Cloud put on a short performance by spontaneously rapping to random words from the audience.
