The Bachelor of Applied Technology (BAT) degree in Cloud Computing at Northwest Vista College launched this fall semester with 143 declared majors. This is 30% above the target enrollment goal of 110 students.
In 2017, the 85th Legislature in Texas passed Texas Senate Bill 2118, which made it possible for qualified community colleges and programs to offer technical bachelor degrees in high-demand careers. Last year, NVC applied to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and received approval for the Bachelor of Applied Technology Degree in Cloud Computing. One of the reasons NVC chose this program is that it offers significant growth potential and sustainable wages.
In preparation for the fall semester, the Academic team collaborated with Marketing & Strategic Communications, Student Success, and the college’s Strategy and Planning Team on several enrollment strategies. The most effective strategy proved to be the Lunch and Learn sessions which yielded many curious students. Additionally, this past summer, advertising was disseminated, marketing materials were created, and NVC employees organized and appeared on local morning shows to raise awareness of the program.
NVC Bachelor of Applied Technology Program Coordinator Dr. John Grillo said two of the biggest selling factors he’s hearing from students are that the program is affordable and convenient.
“Students are telling me how much money they can save by getting a bachelor’s degree at a community college price.” He added, “Students also appreciate that they can move right into the program without having to visit with more advisors or tour another campus if they had to transfer to a four-year university.”
Students who attend all four years of the BAT program will pay about $15,000—which is what many students pay for one semester at a four-year university. Additionally, the program is 100% online, which is convenient for working adults. Another benefit is that students can earn micro-credentials and certificates from Amazon Web Services (AWS).
The program is open to all students. Information Technology training or experience is not required. Those with careers or some background in IT can move faster toward completion because NVC awards credit for prior learning and experience.
