These terms apply to all full-time, part-time, and adjunct faculty for use during any period of time in which a continuity of instruction plan would be in place:
Asynchronous Communication
Relay of information with a time lag. Discussion forums and email are two examples of how asynchronous communication is employed in remote learning.
Remote Learning
Remote Learning occurs when the learner and instructor, or source of information, cannot meet in a traditional classroom setting.
Remote Learner
A student who cannot meet in a traditional classroom setting.
Remote Teacher
A full-time or adjunct faculty member who conducts teaching remotely during a period of temporary closure of facilities.
Remote Teaching
Teaching that is done removed from a central brick-and-mortar office or classroom during a period of temporary closure of facilities.
Synchronous Communication
Also referred to as “real-time” communication which requires participants to be present and focused. Examples include phone calls, conference calls, and video conferences.
Remote Worker
A person who does remote work, or fulfills a role in a company without being present in the employer’s physical workplace.
