Helping Students with Investing and Marketable Skills

Business man with concepts of growth, innovation, vision, success, and creativity with rising arrows

As part of the Business and Entrepreneurship Institute, Northwest Vista College Economics instructor Rolando Sanchez is helping students with investing and developing their marketable skills.

Investing Symposium

He recently started monthly meetings called “Investment Symposiums,” in which he facilitates discussions tied to investment and trading topics. This extracurricular opportunity includes an investment portfolio competition with monetary prizes for the top three performers.

Rolando said the purpose is to provide an experiential learning environment for students as they trade their fictitious portfolios while broadening their understanding of business and economics. The symposiums are open to all students and a book and trading software also will be provided. Food will be served at the meetings, and speakers will be added starting in the fall semester.

Digital Badges

In another initiative, Rolando is representing NVC in a joint one-year pilot program with Northeast Lakeview College intended for NVC students or graduates to acquire digital credentials to help them in the hiring process and workplace success. This program involves a national group of educational institutions and their employer partners.

Rolando said as NVC’s lead, he will provide input in the content creation for the training, help coordinate mock interviews, and identify student participants. Students will be able to earn any of the three badges that are available this semester. They are (1) Oral Communication, (2) Critical Thinking, and (3) Initiative. He said this semester,  H-E-B is the employer partner, who identified these three badges as priority for our students to possess.
