Celebrating Deb Morgan with a Reflection Station

The Northwest Vista College community came together the morning of Sept. 10 to a special in-person outdoor event to pay tribute to Dr. Deb Morgan, who was an integral part of NVC’s early development. She passed away in 2018.

The event was to raise funds for a Deb Morgan Reflection Station. This will be a lakeside, mosaic bench and permanent work of art that will serve as a focal point and gathering spot for the NVC communityDr. Deb Morgan was one of NVC’s creators who worked for NVC, SAC and the Alamo Colleges District and believed in creating opportunities for students’ success. Dr. Morgan is the late wife of NVC math professor Dr. Dennis J. Gittinger.

Situated by the lake, the “reflecting station” will create a confluence of nature, beauty, sharing, and learning. This piece will invite students to gather, enjoy the view of our beautiful campus, and perhaps be inspired to design their own creations.

NVC faculty and San Antonio artist Diana Kersey created the renderings for this fabulous bench and was at the event to provide context of the Reflection Station and help people hone their pottery skills. Faculty and staff from all across the college including the Math department, Art, Student Success, Information Technology, College Services and the President’s Office took part in the event including the making of pottery, and reflecting on the impact Deb Morgan had on the college and student success.

Dr. Shelah Simmons, chair of the NVC Presidents Office Business Council (POBC) provided a $1,000 donation on behalf of POBC to offset the cost for the art piece.
