Telling our Students the Importance of Advising

With our ever changing student enrollment, it is often challenging to get the message across to students that visiting with their advisor prior to registration is vital to their success at Northwest Vista College.

The NVC Advising Team could use your help! We are hoping our own NVC staff and faculty will help us communicate to students why it is critical they see their advisor prior to the start of registration. First in order to do so, students must check their ACES emails and not their Canvas emails for messages from their advisors.

Many students do not realize that their Alamo.edu/student email is different from their Canvas email. Current NVC students are contacted regularly through their student email with a link to setup their Advising appointment.

Once a student schedules an appointment with their advisor, here are a few examples on how they can be helped through advising:

  1. Make sure they are on the right path! If a student wishes to earn an associate degree or transfer to a four-year college, they must take certain classes to fulfill those requirements. An advisor can make sure the students courses align to their transfer and career goals.
  2. A student must meet with their advisor to get help with financial aid appeals, academic dismissal, obtain their registration PIN and submit requests to register for more than their allowable hours. These services require an appointment with an advisor.
  3. Address any potential issues with the students’ academic record, such as holds and/or academic standing. Many students are surprised to learn they may have a hold. It’s important students check their records and address any issues prior to the start of registration.
