The Northwest Vista College Plus+STEM cohort students and High School Bridge students visited The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) Klesse College of Engineering and Integrated Design on Friday June 23, 2023.
In addition, several of the Plus+STEM students are also members of the TATE consortium agreement between NVC/Alamo Colleges and UTSA. Joanna Martinez Gutierrez was an excellent tour guide and showed the students the engineering student organization space, tutoring services, and classrooms. Dr. Don Petersen gave the students an introduction to the UTSA Makerspace facilities and equipment from 3D printing (including metal laser power bed fusion printing) to the machine shop area and tools. Dr. John Votion showed the students the Unmanned System Lab (used and maintained by Dr. Yongcan Cao’s research team) and discussed drone systems.
In addition, Prakash Nair (Plus+STEM PI), Claudia Verdin (Plus+STEM co-PI), Thomas Pressly (Plus+STEM co-PI), Roxanne Penaloza (Plus+STEM Grant Manager), Mana Escobar, Melaku Bogale, and Mark Jurena (all partially supported this summer through Plus+STEM to provide workshops to the students) from NVC also accompanied the students. We would like to thank Jennifer McDaniel (UTSA Klesse College Assistant Director of Recruitment) for arranging the visit and our hosts Joanna Martinez Gutierrez, Dr. Don Petersen, and Dr. John Votion.
Students can apply for the Plus+STEM program and the TATE program on our NVC websites.
