Plus+STEM Students Transition Back to Campus with a Tour

From the Plus+STEM Team

Our first face-to-face meeting with the NVC Plus+STEM student cohort was on Friday 18, 2022. For many of the students, it was among one of the first times they had been to campus To help support our students as they transition back, our first activity was a campus tour in small groups. The students visited the following locations and learned about their support functions:

  • Science, Technology and Engineering Tutoring – MLH-104 and LOH-230 & LOH-239
  • NVC STEAM Makerspace – MLH-214
  • IT Help Desk – MZH-106
  • GrabNGo and Student Advocacy Center – HH-101
  • Rec Sports and Student Life – HH First Floor Lobby
  • Open Computer Lab – JH-106G
  • College level writing lab – JH-216
  • Math Lab and Math Advocacy Center – JH-316 and JH-308
  • NVC Library – RLC First Floor Lobby
  • Writing Across the Curriculum Lab – RLC-215
  • Speech Lab – LOH-106
  • Records, Advising, Veterans Support – Welcome Center – DWWC

The students witnessed the NVC Touchstones of Joy and Caring in their discussions with each of the representatives for the support services. It was a pleasure to witness all the interactions and to see how strongly NVC supports the entire student with both face-to-face and remote services.

The Northwest Vista College (NVC) Portal Leading to Undergraduate Success in Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (Plus+STEM) program is a Hispanic serving institution (HSI), Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) U.S. Department of Education grant. This grant supports our NVC students by enhancing student supports (including mental health support) and educational quality.  This increases equity for our underserved populations and improves retention, persistence, success, transfer, and degree completion in STEM at NVC. Dr. Prakash Nair, Chemistry, is the principal investigator (PI), while Dr. Claudia Verdin, Math, and Dr. Thomas Pressly, Engineering, are the Co-PIs.

As part of the grant, we are planning research and internship opportunities, as well as speakers, workshops, and Supplemental Instruction (SI Leaders). Applications are closed for Spring 2022.  However, student applications are still being accepted for Summer and Fall on our website: https://www.alamo.edu/nvc/academics/plus-stem/
