Northwest Vista College’s Black Lives Matter Association is excited to give a platform to student voices and bring three work sessions to NVC’s Employee Development Day on Oct. 30.
This year has been challenging not only for employees, but especially for students learning how to deal with racial injustice that stems many years before they were born and live through a pandemic. To help amplify Black Voices at NVC, a group of faculty and staff formed this semester the NVC Black Lives Matter Association (NVC BLM-A). Also this past summer, NVC’s leadership team made a commitment to being an antiracist college
Four members of the NVC BLM-A recently spoke with three students of NVC’s Black Student Union to get a better insight on how racial injustice is impacting their lives. See the video below.
The video will also be available to watch during NVC’s Employee Development Day. During that day, the NVC BLM-A will present three work sessions. One is focused on cultural integration, the other topic is centered on diversity in classroom curriculums and finally internalizing anti-blackness. Alencia Warner, Arizechukwu Okolo and Chance Moreno of the NVC Black Student Union addressed these questions in the video below:
- How has the Black Lives Matter movement impacted you?
- Have you participated in any of the local protests in any way?
- How do you think NVC can serve its Black students better?
Additionally, Dr. Brenya Buchalski put together a video below showcasing some of the members of the NVC BLM Association. All faculty and staff are welcome to join. Weekly meetings are held Thursdays at 4 pm and subcommittees are focused on professional development, mentoring and support. Here’s the group’s Canvas page.
