NVC Librarian Receives TWU Library Award

Rose Rodriguez has been named the recipient of the Texas Woman’s University (TWU) School of Library & Information Science (SLIS) Ann Barnett Service Award.

She was invited to attend the Texas Library Association (TLA) Annual Conference where she was honored for her exemplary service to the principles and purposes of librarianship and professional education as demonstrated by sensitivity and responsiveness to people’s needs.

Dr. Jeng, director of the TWU SLIS, presented her with a plaque and $1,000. She stated, “Rose stood out to the award committee because of her dedicated service and multitude of library initiatives.”

Within her first year at NVC she organized two new services, the Pop-up Library bike and Book a Librarian. She successfully led the effort to establish the first zine library at a community college in Texas. She co-founded the Vista Veterans Library, a place on campus where student veterans can take a break from daily disruptions, relax, and study. She implements a holistic approach in the classroom and hosts library programs that practice normalizing mental health support, love, and creating authentic connections with ourselves and others. She offers guided meditation to her colleagues during Mental Health Awareness month and hosts Meditation at Lago Vista during finals week.

Her willingness to collaborate and build connections with others appears through committees. She is a Staff Senate senator, a member of the Women’s History Month Committee, Co-Facilitator for the Collaborative for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice, member of the NVC Wellness Committee and District Wellness Committee, the NVC Archives Committee, and she helps organize the Northwest Vista College monthly DEI Professional Development – Moving Diversity Forward Workshops. Additionally, Rose has received numerous grants and scholarships that have opened doors for professional development opportunities and funding for library services.

Rose is humbled and honored to be named the recipient for the 2023 Ann Barnett Service Award!
