NVC Hosts Annual Competition for Community College Composers

Northwest Vista College hosted its annual Jack Stone Award for New Music on March 23 – the only national music competition dedicated solely to music composition for community college students.

The competition was created in 2010 by music faculty Dr. Beth May who was teaching at Northwest Vista College at the time. Both the competition and the follow-up concert are a dedication to the late Dr. Jack Edward Stone, an accomplished musician, educator and community college leader.

“This year, Northwest Vista College hosted a virtual celebration of back-to-back concerts for 2020 and 2021 as a way to make up what we missed during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said NVC Vice President for Academic Success Dr. Daniel Powell. “We are honored to provide this opportunity for community college musicians.”

The six student award winners had their music performed by Tetractys New Music Players which consists of Peir Shiuan Tang, piano; Matthew Armbruster, cello; and Christopher Demetriou, percussion.
