The Teaching with Technology area of Northwest Vista College is happy to share with its newly revised, revamped, and improved Orientation to Online Learning – OLRN-0001.
OLRN (“Oh-learn”) is a no-fee, no-credit, fully online orientation for students who are new to online courses. It generally takes about 1-2 hours to complete.
OLRN is designed to share best online learning practices from a student perspective including self-motivation, keeping an open mind, time management, and smart study habits. OLRN also provides info and links to many student services. And it gives new-to-online students plenty of guidance and practice using Canvas, our online learning management system. Throughout the self-paced orientation, students will send and receive individualized communication with the facilitator through the Canvas discussions, quizzes, assignments, and inbox messaging.
To view the public version of OLRN for advisors and faculty, just click this Orientation to Online Learning – OLRN-0001 link, and you will be able to see the entire orientation, including all content and activities. No login is needed.
NOTE: Because this is a public copy, you will not be able to “do” or submit the discussion, quizzes, assignments, or inbox message that the enrolled students complete. But you will be able to see everything the enrolled students see.
Students enroll in OLRN the same way they enroll in their other classes using the schedule and current course CRNs. About 1,400 students enroll in OLRN each year; 85-90% of students who complete OLRN agree or strongly agree that the orientation helped to prepare them for their online classes, and those who complete OLRN have higher success rates in their subsequent online classes than those who don’t complete it.
