Nobel Laureate, Alex Filippenko, spoke in the Palmetto Performance Hall on April 16, to a standing room-only audience.
[image 1]At the opening ceremony for this year’s Northwest Vista Earth Day celebration, we announced our intent to work on attaining a designation as a Tree Campus USA, a program sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation and administered locally by the Texas Forest Service.
I hope you will mark your calendars to get involved in Northwest Vista College’s Earth Day activities on April 18.
[image 1]Getting K-12 students to focus on math and science is not always easy, but at Northwest Vista College, we have our Texas Institute for Educational Robotics or TIER under the leadership of Andrew Schuetze to get students engaged.
I hope you can find an opportunity in your classes to remind students of the April 1 deadline to apply for Alamo Colleges Foundation fall 2013 scholarships.
As most of you know, one of our three college strategic plan objectives is “student completion.” This objective aligns with the goal for all of our Alamo Colleges to improve graduation rates. One of the strategies to support the goal of improving graduation is the development of a “STAY THE COURSE” series.

Last Friday, some of us had the opportunity to attend the annual Northwest Vista Scholarship Recognition Breakfast where we thanked individuals and companies for their donations and provided the opportunity for them to connect with students who benefit from the donations.
[image 1]Thanks to everyone who took the time to attend one or more of the sessions with Mark Smith, the SACS (Southern Association for Colleges and Schools) Vice President assigned to Northwest Vista College. He was most helpful in broadening our understanding of the accreditation process and expectations as well as in helping to clarify current issues with which we are grappling.
At my invitation, Northwest Vista’s Liaison from SACS (the Southern Association for Colleges and Schools and our accreditation body), Dr. Mark Smith, will be visiting us February 13 to 15.
Northwest Vista College, under the leadership of Vice President of College Services Julie Pace, has been working hard over the last few months to plan and improve our Safety and Emergency Response processes.
