AlamoPROMISE Expansion – More Opportunities to Eradicate Poverty

NVC Leadership Message
Robin Lund, Dean for Student Success – Advising and Enrollment

On Dec. 13, 2022, the Alamo College District Board of Trustees approved the expansion of the AlamoPROMISE program. With this expansion, AlamoPROMISE will now serve 73 San Antonio area high schools; offering the promise of tuition-free college for approximately 20,500 additional high school seniors.

With the initial launch of Promise in 2019, NVC partnered with John Jay and Holmes high schools as inaugural members of the program. Stevens, Marshall, and Chavez Excel Academy were quickly added in 2021. This mid-year expansion will welcome the remaining high schools within Northside Independent School District (NISD) to the Promise family and we are elated to see this opportunity brought to all students within Northside.

To be AlamoPROMISE eligible, students must:

  • Complete the “Save Your Seat” form

  • Apply for Admission to one of the colleges of the Alamo College District through ApplyTexas

  • Submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TAFSA)

  • Complete any documents required to process a financial aid award

  • Register at one of the colleges of the Alamo Colleges District for the fall semester, immediately following their senior year of high school.

Students should submit the following by Feb. 28, 2023 to guarantee consideration to become an AlamoPROMISE Scholar:

Luz Hernandez, senior coordinator for Student Success – Outreach and Recruitment, shared, “We are excited at the opportunity to have extended Promise to thousands more and look forward to helping NISD seniors Save their Seat for the upcoming Fall 2023 term!” Our Admissions team will be in the high schools working with students to complete all steps of the program and for enrollment.

Here are some testimonials from our current Alamo Promise students:

After completing my first semester as an AlamoPromise scholar. I feel accomplished and proud it only goes uphill from here. I’m ready to tackle another semester until I achieve my goal. AlamoPromise has given me hope and has made me realize that it’s possible for anyone to achieve higher education. If you can dream it you can definitely achieve it and that’s what I’ve learned in being an AlamoPromise scholar.

The AlamoPROMISE program has helped me overcome the financial aspect of college. Although I am only planning on getting my basics done and then transferring to a University, having 2 years of my college experience paid for saved not only me but my family so much money. This program has been more than a blessing.

I would tell current high school seniors to really take advantage of this opportunity. There are some criteria to follow like maintaining your grades but that only makes you work harder which would look amazing on transfer transcripts. This program alone has helped so many students, and I know for a fact that it will continue to help so much more.

AlamoPROMISE was the only resource I had to afford school. I enjoy being in the Alamo Colleges district and this program is what made that possible for me. It has really opened so many opportunities for me in the future!

AlamoPROMISE really helped my family by avoiding putting any economic stress due to my education.
