A Lot of Brags at the February Bragging Breakfast

The February Bragging Breakfast, hosted by NVC Academic Success, started with some heartwarming brags from Northwest Vista College President Dr. Ric Baser and faculty and staff.

Dr. Baser said NVC’s College Resume was just updated, by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, with 2016 numbers and NVC had a 26.6 percent three-year graduation rate among the very large college group. The peer group average was only 16.2 percent – making NVC one of the top colleges in this category. Additionally, the resume shows that NVC awarded 3,468 associate degrees in fiscal year 2016. The peer group average was 2,254, again making NVC one of the top colleges in this field.
NVC Math faculty Michael Gurwitz also had an encouraging brag. He said many high school students are coming to NVC not proficient in math and also don’t realize they are not ready for college math. Just recently over 400 high school students took part in a math orientation at NVC and because of recent math initiatives by NVC, about 150 of these students were able to be put in math courses that would enable them to succeed.

“We were able to hep many of these students because we are in a college culture that supports (helping students),” Michael said.

Dr. Baser added these systematic changes NVC is making with math will and is making a difference in the success of our students.

Another brag came from Richard T. Chamblin, Jr., Northwest Vista’s  Chair of Natural & Physical Sciences. He told the story of how NVC instructor Gladys Malave went above and beyond to teach two blind sisters in her class. Not only did Gladys learn Braille, but she made tactile boards and labeled lab equipment, such as thermometers and beakers, so the girls could participate in the class and not just sit to the side, like they were accustomed to.
