Three NVC Librarians Lead Sessions for Employee Development Day

Librarian Amanda Gorrell joined with Personal Counselor Adriana Cantu in presenting “Move Over Cozy Books—Here Come Cozy Video Games!”  They discussed how video games, especially non-violent ones, can contribute to mental wellness by helping people de-stress and relax.  They shared examples of games and invited participants to share their own experiences with gaming for relaxation.

Librarians Rose Rodriguez and Linda Reeves shared “Zines and Mental Wellness.” In their interactive session, participants learned about the history of Zines, NVC Library’s new Zine Library, and how zines can be used in class assignments. They also learned how creating a zine can contribute to mental wellness. During the last half of the session, participants learned how to develop, assemble, and print their own zines.

All About Zines

NVC Librarian, Rose Rodriguez, presented Literary Art of Zine Making to UTSA’s Mexican American Studies Latina/o/x Cultural Expressions Dual Credit class held at Fox Tech High School. Based on feedback the presentation really helped the students understand how important zines are for healing, documenting, and expressing themselves. We hope a few will submit to the NVC Zine Library after their final project!

How to Publish in an Academic Journal

Don’t you wish there was a way for students to get experience with publishing in an academic journal? Catarina Garza did, and so she did something about it. Cat, a library assistant II with the NVC Library and a graduate student in History at the University of Texas at San Antonio, collaborated with a few like-minded graduate students and founded their own academic journal. Take a look at Beyond Boundaries: Mastering the Liberal Arts. It is “an open-access, student-organized academic journal designed as an inclusive forum for UTSA graduate students to demonstrate original work and experience the process of reviewing, editing, and submitting for publication.” The founders explain their thinking behind this journal in their Letter from the Founders. Kudos to Cat for this great start to her professional career!
