The Northwest Vista College Business Council held its annual scholarship and celebration brunch this past Friday, Dec 7.
Members of the local business community were present to participate in this year’s election of new leadership and discuss future goals and objectives.
Chair of the Council, local business owner and Alamo City Black Chamber of Commerce Parliamentarian Shelah Simmons, began the meeting by stressing the importance of internships for students as they pursue their careers and future in business.
This semester students participated in a simulated “Shark Tank” drill where participants presented original business ideas and models to a panel of judges. Vice President of Staffing and Development Officer Joe Perez was a judge at this year’s event.
“I was astounded at the level of creativity I saw from each student,” said Perez. “I am excited for the future of business and the future of these talented individuals.”
The Business Leader Career Coaching program currently has openings for the spring 2019 semester for those wishing to coach or mentor students perusing a career in business. The program matches participants with an NVC Student Development instructor and his or her class. During the semester, career coaches provide presentations on a variety of topics including goal setting, career development, interpersonal communication, financial literacy and more. Two Council members served as coaches for the fall 2018 semester.
All membership dues for the Council are used to provide scholarships for NVC students. Three students who received Business Council or GM Financial scholarships attended the brunch: John Robinson, Guang Zhou and Steven Trevino. The three shared with the audience the impact scholarships have made in their lives.
