QEP – Helping Students Via Belonging and Mentoring

The Northwest Vista College Quality Enhancement Program committee has selected the next QEP topic and it is Belonging!

The goal is to help NVC First-Generation students celebrate where they are on their academic journey while understanding how the NVC community can support them and their families along the way.

The purpose is also to recognize and celebrate NVC employees who are first-generation college graduates by asking
them to mentor our First-Generation students. The QEP committee seeks to increase fall-to fall persistence in first-generation NVC students as well as help create a sense of belonging in this group of students. Students are eligible for a financial award after completing certain goals.

In order to bring First-Generation students and employees together, the QEP committee created “Our New Experience” or ONE Mentor program. The program will foster a sense of community through collaborative mentoring instead of traditional advising and focus more on creating places, spaces, and events where knowledgeable, passionate, first-generation mentors can share their experiences and insights with First-Generation Wildcats.

Events for ONE in September were as follows:

  • September 3 & 4: QEP Information Sessions for students. Students enjoyed donuts, coffee, and information about joining the ONE program.

  • September 18th: Student Involvement Fair. Many students came by the Mentoring table to gather information about the ONE program and sign up as potential mentees

  • September 20th: Visits by the ONE Team and the Faculty Student Mentoring (FSM) Program to various Academic Areas to introduce the ONE program to faculty
