NVC & Three Colleges Participate in Judging Scholarship Applications

[image 1]Northwest Vista College joined three other Alamo Colleges in the consolidated scholarship application judging event held Sept. 19, at the Workforce Center of Excellence. Other participating colleges include San Antonio College, Palo Alto College and St. Philip’s College.

The number of student applications received by the Sept. 15 Alamo Colleges Foundation application deadline exceeded 1,500, according to Anna Rangel, scholarship coordinator for the Foundation.

NVC faculty and staff members serving as judges included Toni Canestaro, Jimena Marin, Paul Northway, Angelica Esparza, Ruth Prieto, Kori Schneider, Barbara Perez, Greg Ward and Jack Robbins.

[image 2]“It was very moving to read the stories of some of the applicants. And, one thing I will do after participating in this judging is to promote the scholarship application in my classes,” Toni Canestaro said as she described her first time as an NVC scholarship application judge.

Clinton Jones, vice president and business operations manager senior at Chase Bank; Theresa Patlan, recruiting coordinator at Nationwide; Nigel Lewis, national account executive, Nationwide Affinity Solutions; Bibi Villarreal, senior manager, Capital Group; Walberto Molina, personal banking officer, Frost Bank; and Vanessa Villarreal, community representative of Frost Bank, represented NVC as community members on the judging panel. 

Lynne T. Dean, NVC director of institutional advancement; Manny Martinez, NVC alumni coordinator, and Javier Morales, NVC grant writer, helped facilitate the judging event. 

[image 3]Scholarship awards range from $200 to $3,000 per academic year with an average award amount of approximately $750, and are applied to the recipient’s student account for tuition, fees, books and other educational costs. 

Last year, NVC awarded $196,244 in scholarships to 354 students.
