Recently, team members from Northwest Vista College’s Community Math grant participated in a “platica” (conversation) at Time Dollar community center on the city’s West Side.
“What an honor to hear from moms (and one dad ) who are learning how to advocate for their children, and soon for each other…all while learning math,” said Heidi Hunt, Ed.D, Co-PI of NVC’s Title V Community Math Grant.
Last year, Northwest Vista College received a $3.7 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education for its community math project. The funds will help NVC tutor 12 parents at the Time Dollar community center on the West Side. The funds also will be used to pilot a program at NVC with current preservice teachers to strengthen their basic math skills, and will infuse growth mindset principles into the math courses that preservice teachers take.
