NVC Says Good Bye to its Biggest Cheerleader

Spring break 2017 will never be quite the same. As many of us looked forward to the much-needed break, we received the devastating news that Beverly Evans, a cherished colleague passed away on Sunday, March 12. One employee recently said, a bit of NVC’s spirit left when Beverly went to heaven.

Her charisma and positive outlook touched so many lives as friends, co-workers, and family were posting on Facebook their heartbreak of her untimely passing.

Northwest Vista College President Dr. Ric Baser said in an email that was sent to employees the day she died, “We are deeply sorry for the loss of our beloved colleague and friend Beverly Evans who passed away today. Beverly has been an employee at Northwest Vista College for 16 years and has served our students and community with passion and enthusiasm. As an administrative support specialist, she interacted with hundreds of people including students, faculty, staff and community members and always greeted everyone with excitement, smiles and laughter. She also served on the NVC Staff Council and, at one point, was the NVC Wildcat Cheerleading Coach to driving basketball team members to their basketball games in the college van. While Beverly exhibited all of the NVC Touchstones, community and joy may have been the most visible. We will greatly miss her!”

NVC employees came together on Friday, March 24 to celebrate her life and express what she meant to them. Many told tearful stories from how she once was apart of the NVC softball team, to how through her leadership, the NVC cheer team won the college’s first athletic trophy. Additionally, the previous Wildcat Spirit Award winner, Susan Palmer of the Palmetto Center for the Arts, bestowed the award to Beverly.

While Beverly left, her spirit will continue through the Beverly Evans Memorial NVC Student Life Scholarship fund. To donate, contact Lynne Dean at (Ldean12@alamo.edu). If you haven’t read Beverly’s obituary yet, this paragraph captures her joyful spirit:

Ms. Beverly, “The Diva” loved to dress up since childhood. She would strut into a room and command attention, whatever the occasion. When Beverly was in the building, you definitely knew it for she could be heard as well as seen. And once you met “Diva”, you never forgot her. She was larger than life and she brought joy to all who knew her. She was hilarious and everyone loved to be around her; absorbing that ray of sunshine which radiated within her. “Sally,” a catchphrase that she created was used as a term of endearment or as an exclamation point! She was a very positive person, always looking for the good in any person or situation. She was loyal to a fault, but that was one of the reasons why she was so beloved.

Beverly was a very generous lady – sharing whatever she had; but most importantly, sharing her precious time – helping those in need in whatever capacity; providing moral support and giving encouragement. Family was everything to Queenie and she showed her love in so many ways, taking care of her mother until her mother passed, taking great care of her son and granddaughter and providing much appreciated support to her sisters. Beverly was one of a kind – never to be duplicated. “For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.” Hebrews 6:10

    Sally,
I miss you every day. When I think of you, I smile. I hear your voice, your laughter and your Sally-isms all the time. They are what get me through my days when I feel sad, which has been a lot lately. I know you wouldn’t want me to be sad and I’m trying not to be. I love you so very much! I’m so glad to have met your beautiful family and can’t wait until we meet again in heaven. I bet you are making everyone laugh up there because that’s what you do. 🙂

    Missing you tons,
    Sally Esparza
