NVC Holiday Break Safety

  • Do not leave any gifts in your vehicle in order to prevent break ins.
  • Report any smoke or fire immediately by calling Alamo College District Police at 210-485-0911. If you see something, say something.
  • It is the policy of the Alamo College District to prohibit all types of space heaters unless they meet the exemption in accordance with Board Policy C.2.1.,2.1.2 (Procedure) Portable Space Heaters 1.
  • All appliances and equipment must be Underwriter Laboratory (UL) approved.
  • Do not overload extension cords or outlets. If you need to plug in two or more appliance, get a UL-approved unit with a built in circuit breaker. Report any electrical hazards to your supervisor Facilities, or Risk Management.
  • Never use gasoline, kerosene, or similar flammables liquids indoors. Store in approved containers in well ventilated storage areas.
  • Familiarize yourself with the primary and secondary evacuation routes for your building.
  • Practice good housekeeping in the workplace. Clutter contributes to fires by providing fuel and by preventing access to exits and emergency equipment.
  • Never block sprinklers, firefighting equipment or emergency exits. Observe clearances when stacking materials. The clearance for storing items is 18” from the sprinkler head.
  • Smoking is prohibited on Northwest Vista campus.
  • Use and store chemicals in accordance with the Safety Data Sheet. Provide adequate ventilation when using and storing these substances.
  • Learn how to use fire extinguishers when training is offered. Verify extinguishers are serviceable.
  • Ensure all exit sign and flooding lighting is operable. If not, submit a work request to Facilities.
  • In kitchen areas, break rooms and specials events where cooking takes place, keep anything that can catch fire – pot holders, oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper or plastic bags, food packaging, and towels or curtains—away from your stove, oven or any other appliance in the kitchen that generates heat.
  • If a fire starts in the microwave, turn off the microwave, and don’t open it until the fire is completely out. Unplug the microwave if it’s safe to do so.
  • Heat producing holiday lighting, flame candles and live holiday trees are prohibited. Exemptions are addressed in District procedure2.1.8 (Procedure) Holiday Decorations and C.2.1.2 (Procedure) Portable Space Heaters, Open Flames 2.
