Helping Instructors How to Use Zines

Rose Rodriguez, Dawna Upshaw and Veronica Luna of Northwest Vista College recently presented “Zines as a Pedagogical Tool and an Exemplar of Faculty-Librarian Collaboration” at the Palo Alto College Faculty Symposium: Celebrating Scholarship and Teaching on Feb. 28.

A zine (zeen), short for “fanzine” or “magazine” is an independently published booklet and is created with the methods of cutting and gluing content or digital creation. Zines have been around a while. In the 1930s, there were science fiction fanzines; social and political activism zines in the 1960’s; and punk, feminist, do-it-yourself scene and lifestyle zines in the 1980’s to present.

In some of the SDEV 0370 classes, zines have been introduced to help students explore careers and inspire others. On March 18, the NVC library will celebrate the grand opening of its new Zine Library from 10 am to 1pm.
