Get Your Online Teaching Certification

We will be offering the Online Teaching Certification (OTC) course once in Spring 2019:

  • The session will start on Mon., February 4th and finish on Sun., Apr. 7th

The course itself runs 8 weeks (with Spring Break from Mar. 11-17); it is the first step of the four-step certification process required for all faculty who wish to teach online courses for the Alamo Colleges. The course is fully online, there is no fee, and all materials are provided.

Here’s what the process entails:

  1. Enroll and participate in a fully online course (OTC) that teaches faculty how to build an effective online course and how to teach in the online environment. You’ll work with peers, distance learning experts, an instructional designer, and a faculty mentor throughout the process.
  2. Build an online course of your own; or, if your department or co-worker supplies you with an existing course or course template, adapt that to make it your own.
  3. Have your online course reviewed and revise as necessary.
  4. Present your online course and plan for teaching online in a discussion with a small committee including your chair/discipline coordinator and a member of the NVC online teaching community.

How long does the entire process take? That’s really up to you and your experience with the online tools and environment, the amount of time you have available to dedicate to the four steps above, and whether or not your chair has plans to offer you an online course in the upcoming semesters. The course itself is 8 weeks long; the building, revising, and presenting process takes anywhere from a few weeks to a semester or so. You will work with a mentor from your own or a similar discipline throughout the online course development process. Most participants who complete the OTC course earn their certification within 1-2 semesters.
