Free Speech Conference Sept. 23-26

Free Speech is a widely discussed and debated topic. Its impact is far reaching—from the internet to the classroom and to the white house, this fundamental right has been interpreted in many different ways.

To expand on this conversation, San Antonio College will be devoting an entire week to its discussion during the Free Speech Conference to be held September 23-26th on campus. They are currently looking for presentation/event proposals to be submitted by student organizations, staff and faculty that focus on the broad topic of Free Speech in any of its various forms. Possible topics could include:

  • How does censorship affect public discourse?
  • Free speech vs. true speech: “fake news” and “alternative facts” in the media.
  • Freedom of speech or hate speech in social media
  • Freedom of speech on campus
  • How to protect freedom of speech
  • Freedom of speech in scientific and technical industries
  • Free speech vs. organizational policy
  • Free Speech in the arts (e.g. theater, music, street art)

If you or your organization are interested in hosting an event, panel, presentation or want to bring in a guest speaker during this conference, please contact Nati Román at or Marcos Langoni at so that we can send you the proposal forms as quickly as possible. Submission deadline is Aug. 26. Please note that funding is limited and proposals will be reviewed on a first come first serve basis.
