Election Day Scavenger Hunt Gets on TV

By 11 am on Election Day, students of Robert Marbut’s Learning Community Government class had already been a part of several different media appearances.

They were guests on KENS-5’s “Great Day” morning show, been interviewed by KTSA radio and Telemundo TV station and were a part of a separate news story by KENS-5.

The day for the two groups of students who participated in this year’s Election Day Scavenger Hunt was yet to be over since they were following a grueling scavenger hunt schedule that had them all over the city from sun up to sun down.

NVC student Vuleica Olvera said she was asked by a Telemundo reporter to talk about the scavenger hunt and her thoughts on women’s issues during the election

Andrew Thomas, another NVC student, said he was asked by a KTSA reporter if the voting age should be raised or lowered.

Robert said this activity provides an unprecedented exposure to the many facets of an election – observing the highs and lows of candidates learning results at campaign watch parties to meeting with election officials.

Some of the tasks students had to complete to gain points for the assignment included taking a group picture at a victory party, getting a signature of a state judge, taking a picture with an election judge and even finding Sen. Leticia Van de Putte and asking her how many children she has (while on tape).

Robert, a former San Antonio City Councilman, also had a busy schedule on Election Day from working with his students and doing election commentary for WOAI radio. An interview Robert did on KTSA the day prior to the scavenger hunt also snagged much attention from listeners. The interview resulted in Dr. Donna Campbell, who won her Texas senate seat, contacting Robert to meet the students.

Robert’s students also got to travel to the Texas Legislature in Austin on Wednesday, Nov. 7 for post-election results.
