Educator of the Year: Northwest Vista College Recognized

This week, I learned that the West San Antonio Chamber of Commerce is presenting five local leaders with Legacy Awards, one of which is the Educator of the Year. I am humbled that this recognition is being bestowed upon me as I consider each one of Northwest Vista College faculty and staff to be the recipients of this tremendous recognition.

Your dedication and commitment to student success is the reason our graduation rate has doubled from 2014 to 2017. NVC’s fall-to-spring persistence rate for full-time, first time in college students is now at 89 percent.

Monday night (May 13) was NVC’s largest commencement ceremony with 794 students crossing the stage. In all, we had 905 graduates. The number of associate degrees and certificates is still being counted with estimates so far reaching 1,080 for spring 2019, compared to 889 awards.

NVC’s faculty and staff continue to innovate. Our Project Math Paths, Community Math, Archeology Field School, Veteran’s Lounge & Resource Center, NVC’s Food Pantry and outreach on the West Side of San Antonio are examples of equity and inclusion initiatives that support NVC’s mission and our 2018-2023 Strategic Plan.

This is the reason NVC is recognized as the No. 1 community college in Texas and No. 6 in the nation. Together, we’re creating a culture of Care, Achievement and Distinction, efforts that are being recognized by our community partners.

The West San Antonio Chamber of Commerce has a stellar reputation and seeks to promote economic prosperity by connecting, advocating and supporting the business community which also includes higher education and nonprofit organizations.

Our collective recognition as the Educator of the Year Legacy Award is NVC’s contribution over the last quarter century to the economic prosperity of our graduates and our community. Thank you for being part of this effort!
